Wangara Australian Waler Horses
"the time will come when the arid plains and the burning hillsides of Central Australia, will produce a horse that will be famous all over the world, and surpass even the Arab of the desert" E. M. Curr, a chief inspector of stock in the colony of Victoria of the last century.
My first real introduction to Walers was here in the Hunter Valley in 2003. Lindsay McComb had trucked in a number of Waler Brumbies from Newhaven Station to save them from slaughter and hopefully to reintroduce this breed back into mainstream Equestrian world. Full information on Newhaven Station and some of the horses can be found at www.newhavenwalers.com.
I was originally only looking for breeding stock for a friend but was so impressed with the calmness and sensibility of these horses that I ended up taking on three mares of my own (two in foal) and looking after five young fillies until such time they could be sold.
I was graced with two beautiful foals in August 2004, Wangara Redgum, and in November 2004, Wangara Kateema. Saphira is on her way to be educated as are the two brood mares and in the near future hopefully classified into the W.H.O.B.A.A. (Waler Horse Owners and Breeders Association Australia Inc.): www.walerhorses.com.
Waler history, genetics and general information can be found at www.yarramalong.net. Future objectives for Wangara Walers include: maintaining the health and well being of all horses in our care; having mares and eventually foals classified into breed society; reintroducing Walers into mainstream equestrian fields; and to build on existing breeding stock.
Foals are sometimes available for sale and I welcome any queries on Waler Sales or regarding general information on this true blue Australian horse breed. Karen West October 2007.
